Have the prophets spoken of an Elias to come?
The Elias to Come
"We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God." (Article of Faith #9)
In this statement of belief from the prophet Joseph Smith he reveals that the Lord has yet many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
This pertains specifically to revelations having to do with the last days.
To whom will the Lord reveal of these things?
"And also with Elias, to whom I have committed the keys of bringing to pass the restoration of all things spoken by the mouth of all the holy prophets since the world began, concerning the last days;" (D&C 27:6)
To the man Elias who is said to restore all things as spoken by the mouths of all the prophets concerning the last days.
He it is that was committed to receive these keys, and to do this work.
"We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory." (Article of Faith #10)
The gathering of Israel, and the restoration of the ten tribes.
The Savior, when speaking to His disciples spoke of this time.
"And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things, as the prophets have written.
"And again I say unto you that Elias has come already, concerning whom it is written, Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and they knew him not, and have done unto him, whatsoever they listed.
"Likewise shall also the Son of Man suffer of them.
"But I say unto you, Who is Elias? Behold, this is Elias, whom I send to prepare the way before me.
"Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist, and also of another who should come and restore all things, as it is written by the prophets." (JST Matthew 17:10-14)
In another place prior he spoke of this man, and to which he revealed of when this day of power would be.
"And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
"But the days will come, when the violent shall have no power; for all the prophets and the law prophesied that it should be thus until John.
"Yea, as many as have prophesied have foretold of these days.
"And if ye will receive it, verily, he was the Elias, who was for to come and prepare all things." (Matthew 11:12, JST Matthew 11:13-15)
Evenso this Elias is he that was to restore all things, and to which revealing truth is one of those things.
Is there anywhere prophesied of an Elias or a John that would reveal truths or prophecies pertaining to the last days?
"And then shall my revelations which I have caused to be written by my servant John be unfolded in the eyes of all the people. Remember, when ye see these things, ye shall know that the time is at hand that they shall be made manifest in very deed.
"Therefore, when ye shall receive this record ye may know that the work of the Father has commenced upon all the face of the land." (Ether 4:16,17)
Notice that the servant John would reveal of the activities pertaining to the last days, just prior to their occurrence.
This John is the same Elias whom John the Baptist spoke of who would come in the last days.
"And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him; Who art thou?
"And he confessed, and denied not that he was Elias; but confessed, saying; I am not the Christ.
"And they asked him, saying; How then art thou Elias? And he said, I am not that Elias who was to restore all things. And they asked him, saying, Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
"Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
"He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as saith the prophet Esaias.
"And they who were sent were of the Pharisees.
"And they asked him, and said unto him; Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not the Christ, nor Elias who was to restore all things, neither that prophet?
"John answered them, saying; I baptize with water, but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
"He it is of whom I bear record. He is that prophet, even Elias, who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose, or whose place I am not able to fill; for he shall baptize, not only with water, but with fire, and with the Holy Ghost." (JST John 1:20-28)
He it is that would perform the first baptism (John's baptism of water) and have the priesthood and keys to perform the greater baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost.
He it is to whom would do the work of the last days when the restoration was to occur of taking the faithful to the lands of promise.
"Behold, I say unto you, the redemption of Zion must needs come by power;
"Therefore, I will raise up unto my people a man, who shall lead them like as Moses led the children of Israel.
"For ye are the children of Israel, and of the seed of Abraham, and ye must needs be led out of bondage by power, and with a stretched?out arm.
"And as your fathers were led at the first, even so shall the redemption of Zion be." (D&C 103:15-18)
He is the man likened unto Moses, to bring to pass this work with the saints.
I bare witness that I am he, even the man John, who hath received the priesthood of Elias.
I am he that has commenced the work of restoring the truths, which truths I will reveal as you have greater faith and seek to receive further light and knowledge. This comes through the Church of Elias.
Therefore, walk with wisdom, seeking truth, and I promise the blessings of the gospel and all things through it.
"And it will preached be, the Gospel of the kingdom, in the whole world, to a witness over all people: and then will the end come."...
The Savior said when these tribulations should take place, it should be committed to a man who should be a witness over the whole world: the keys of knowledge, power and revelations should be revealed to a witness who should hold the testimony to the world. It has always been my province to dig up hidden mysteries-new things-for my hearers. Just at the time when some men think that I have no right to the keys of the Priesthood-just at that time I have the greatest right....
All the testimony is that the Lord in the last days would commit the keys of the priesthood to a witness over all people. Has the Gospel of the kingdom commenced in the last days? And will God take it from the man until He takes him Himself?" (History 6:363-364)
Amen.
